Living with Coeliac Disease

NZ's fastest growing plant-based supplement brand contains a range of products perfect for those who are gluten intolerant, designed to fill all the nutritional gaps of the modern day diet.

What is coeliac disease?

True gluten allergy is called Coeliac Disease (CD) and is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the intestinal wall and flattening of the microvilli. This leads to decreased absorption of nutrients and symptoms such as abdominal bloating, pain, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, heartburn and nausea. Other symptoms that are associated with CD but are not within the digestive system are as follows; sinusitis, asthma, skin disorders, fatigue, bone and muscle pain, behavioural and mood problems, poor growth in children, weight loss, hair loss, menstrual issues and anaemia.

Gluten sensitivity is a condition where a person is reactive to gluten, but they don‘t have the autoimmune markers that are associated with CD. Many people these days find they react to gluten to a certain level and feel much better without it in their diet. Many of the symptoms of gluten sensitivity are the same as for CD.

International research indicates there could be up to 100,000 people in our NZ team of 5 million with coeliac disease and of those 30,000 are likely to be children under the age of 18. However a large proportion of those are unaware they have the condition. 1

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale. Gluten is added to foods to help hold and maintain their shape. Common foods that contain gluten are breads, cereals, pasta, and sauces. Gluten can also be found in most other processed foods as additives or in trace amounts from production.

How can you ensure you are getting the right nutrients you need every day?

Taking out whole food groups from your diet can be a challenge, not only that, but you can miss out on a lot of nutrients. Making sure you are getting the right amount of nutrients you need every day is vital, and that’s where we come in. Here at Nuzest we make it easy to be healthy. Our products are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, GMO free, and are tested regularly.

Are Nuzest products ok for Coeliacs?

Yes! All Nuzest products are certified gluten free. Every batch of Clean Lean Protein, Good Green Vitality, and Kids Good Stuff is tested for gluten and meets the most stringent gluten-free requirements in the world of <5 ppm.

Is Clean Lean Protein FODMAP friendly?

FODMAPs are certain types of carbohydrates which are poorly digested by some people, causing the gut to produce gasses resulting in symptoms such as pain and bloating. Legumes are a group of foods that are typically limited on a low FODMAP diet due to their high FODMAP content.

Many protein powders are high in FODMAPS due to added sugars, sugar-alcohols or other FODMAP carbohydrates such as sweeteners, fillers or naturally occurring sugars and fibres.

However, our Pea protein isolate contains no FODMAPs due to the isolation process, which results in an extremely high-protein product (up to 88% protein by dry weight) with no sugar, low amounts of carbohydrates and no anti-nutrients found in legumes and plant-based proteins.

Pea protein isolate is a FODMAP friendly food that provides an effective protein supplement for those following a low FODMAP diet.

How is Good Green Vitality labeled gluten-free when it contains barley and wheat grass?

The barley and wheat grass in Good Green Vitality are the growing part of the plants, not the grains, which are the gluten-containing part of the plant. Every batch of Good Green Vitality is tested for gluten and is certified gluten-free.
